I have a strong belief in the rhyme. Myths rhyme throughout history, creating a cultural rythm of the archetype, that we hang our fears, desires and traumas onto. More often than not, I discover some very old theme or lore somewhere, and find it very useful for our current times. – Leo Park
Leo Park (b. 1980) is an artist based in Stockholm. A graduate of Konstfack University of Arts, Craft and Design, with further studies at the Swedish Royal Institute of Art, his practice navigates the intersections of art history and pop culture. Drawing upon sources ranging from the contemporary to the ancient, Park assembles motifs and stylistic fragments into compositions that reflect both the persistence and reinvention of visual languages. Since his solo debut in Stockholm in 2021, he has exhibited internationally in London, New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Berlin, Cologne, Copenhagen, Shanghai, Mexico City, and Taipei. His work has also been presented at major art fairs including the Armory Show, NADA, Market Art Fair, CHART, and Zona Maco.
Leo Park’s practice unfolds at the meeting point of figuration and abstraction. He begins with bodies that feel sculptural and alive, painted with attention to volume, light, and presence. Across these forms he draws tattoo-like inscriptions, graffiti marks and ancient symbols that flatten the surface and fold different times and cultures into one field. The result is a tension between body and sign, flesh and language, where each painting becomes both figure and archive. For Park, myths and archetypes, desire, creation, and death are not fixed stories but recurring rhythms that travel through history and resurface in the present.
