"My process comes from my imagination and feelings, sometimes using my drawings as source material. I create imagery that is metaphorical of relationships in my life." – Carlo D'Anselmi
Carlo D’Anselmi is a multidisciplinary artist based in New York. His work explores the layered psychology of everyday spaces through a vivid and gestural visual language. Drawing from memory, found imagery, and the rhythms of urban life, D’Anselmi creates paintings and drawings that move fluidly between figuration and abstraction. His compositions often reference familiar scenes such as interiors, sidewalks, or elements of public architecture, but these recognizable forms are reimagined through intuitive mark-making, dissonant color, and deliberate distortion.
Originally from New York City, Carlo studied at the New York Studio School. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally, with solo and group shows in cities including New York, Los Angeles, and London. His practice engages with the legacy of American expressionism while exploring contemporary questions of perception, intimacy, and place.

Carlo's process usually begins with a loose structure, such as a quick sketch or a remembered environment. However, the work quickly evolves beyond the boundaries of representation. He primarily uses oil paint and draws with colored pencil and ink, building the image through layers of fast, instinctive gestures alongside more measured revisions. Often, the surface is destroyed and rebuilt several times before it begins to settle into its final state. Rather than capturing a fixed moment, he aims to create a visual experience that feels suspended in time. Each work becomes a site for accumulation, erasure, and reimagining familiar and unfamiliar at once, open to multiple meanings.
