"It is quite difficult because a painting is never really finished. You always miss something because you could work on the same painting your whole life, one painting would be enough." – Julien Saudubray
Julien Saudubray (b. 1985, Paris) is a French artist based in Brussels. A graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, his work delves into the materiality of painting through layered, repetitive gestures. By embracing unpredictability and minimizing subjectivity, Saudubray creates compositions that blur the line between abstraction and figuration, inviting viewers into a meditative exploration of form and process.

Julien Saudubray’s practice centers on the interplay between control and chance within painting. Employing a methodical approach of layering translucent colors, he allows each brushstroke to interact with the previous, fostering a dialogue between the deliberate and the accidental. This mechanistic technique, influenced by artists like Wade Guyton, reduces personal expression to highlight the painting's internal structure. Saudubray views his role as both creator and observer, stating, “I am as much an actor as I am a spectator of the work.”
